A Day at the Beach

This is our camping site at Assateague Island. Isn't it great?
This is the view from the tent site....it's a huge site!
The site backs up to the Chesapeake Bay.

This is the Bay View....This is usually where the horses

come from at night. They come right through our site every

night and walk through the camp. The first time it happened,

it scared us all to death.

It was like a stampede!

We drive on the ocean side to go to the beach.

People respect your space....see no one is around.

These are the closest neighbors we had all day!

We had a group of wind surfers to watch for most of the day....

pretty cool!!

But the star of the show at Assateague is always the horses!

Sometimes, there 10 or 15 on the beach in one day..

We only saw a couple on Sunday,

it was a perfect day.

We will be going back next weekend!

It's been an exciting week for me! The opening of my own Ebay store has been both frightening and exhilerating. I've been selling with a group of artists for many months now and have been quite successful. After a couple of hiccups along the way, I decided that what was best for me was to sell on my own. This first group of auctions went well....I love watching the bidders that get their bids in early and wait it out and then at the last minute two or three bidders swoop in and snatch the painting out of their hands! I always feel a little sorry for the original bidder! I wonder if the first couple of bidders have forgotten about the auction or if they are just not quick enough to get their bids in. Curious to know if you think about those things too?

This group of auctions had some disappointments, too! I expected things to move a little slower than usual but I haven't had an unsold item all year and I have to admit, it hurts my ego, just a bit. I tell myself that it's to be expected, my views are not what they were with the group (our feedback scores were combined to make a score of well over 2,000) which leaves my unattended score of only 61 at the present time. So (as I take a deep breath) I will keep pushing through and celebrate the sales that I do have!

Today I'm working on artwork to send out to the gallery...I'm artist #57. I'm going to consider that a lucky number! Have a great Saturday!

Flying Lessons

I registered for Kellie Rae Robert's e-course "Flying Lessons" over a month ago and it finally

started yesterday. For those of you who aren't familiar with the course, Kellie is teaching everything she has learned along the way about becoming successful through blogging, online marketing and online sales.

Yesterday's post was about listening to your "whispers". I've thought alot about that since yesterday. I have been listening to my inner whispers for the past year - sometimes paying attention, sometimes not. Sometimes, I hear a whisper but something holds me back - fear, usually. I have learned that I need to ignore the fear, push it away, do whatever I must to do to push it aside because usually the whispers I hear, are good ideas.

Today, I ignored the fear and e-mailed a gallery owner. I inquired if she would like to sell my work in her gallery. What did I have to lose? Nothing. What did I have to gain? Exposure, sales, everything. Later this morning, I got a beautiful e-mail back, welcoming me into the gallery! I listened to my whispers and am another step away from my goal of working as a full time artist.

I am so Proud...

I have realized, this week, that I have truly amazing children that have grown into responsible young adults. It's a proud moment for a mother!

My children's grandfather passed away this week. My son has not left his grandmother's side since his grandfather's passing. He has been there to greet people at the house, supported her when she needed it and supported his father in any way necessary. Tonight at the viewing, my daughter joined her brother and father in the receiving line and greeted many dignitaries, politicians, fireman, policeman and hundreds of local friends and family. My children made me so proud and I'm sure their grandfather would be proud as well!

We travelled to Clemson this weekend....left on Wednesday and followed my son down. Both sides of the family are here. My mother, who I haven't seen in about 8 years and my sister and her husband came and Michael's father's sisters and his cousin from Park City came. And of course his girlfriend and bestfriend from home came up with his dad. He was thrilled to have such a large group of people here to see him graduate. Clemson is such a strong spirited school, I can see why he loved it all these years. He left with excitement but sadness - leaving his roommate of four years was tough but he's ready to start the life that is laid out before him.

We're on the road back now and are still glowing with the love that was abundantly shared the last few days. Families are great and mine doesn't get together often enough! Today, I'm goin to see my sister that I haven't seen in five years....Seriously, I've got to do something about these visits..don't you think!

Assateague Bay

Every year we go camping on Assateague Island. We camp on the bayside...never on the beach. Our favorite campsite backs right up to the bay and sometimes the horses walk through a path from the water right through our campsite. What I love about the bay is the gentle sound of the water. There are no big waves, just a gentle lapping of the waves. On the other side of the road is the ocean with it's wild, crashing waves. We don't camp on that side because of the constant wind and blowing sand.

I would like for my life to be like the bay side of the island. It's too much like the ocean side...I can't seem to stay on one side of the road or the other!

It was a beautiful day today! I spent most of it working in the hospital but managed to squeeze in a long walk with the little dogs to the park after work. So long....that we had to carry Jackson, our oldest (three years old) Bischon halfway home! It's amazing that just a few days ago, things looked so dark and bleak for me. I've started reading the book "Life is a Verb" and made a conscious decision to "participate" in life and have begun to feel SO much better! Just taking a walk outside has made such a diference in my life.

My son is graduating from Clemson in two weeks - what a blessing to him and all of us! He is so excited that today is last day of class! Only yesterday, it seems that we moved him into the dorm his freshman year....Two weeks after that my niece will graduate from Salisbury University...again, it seems that it was just yesterday that she was moving in with us as a fourteen year old!

I hope that you are counting your blessings today! And taking good care of yourself.

It's been a week of highs a lows....I started out my week believing that I couldn't take on any more burdens that I had already been given. I put out a call to the Universe or God or whoever is in charge and asked to please slow down on the load because I was about to crack.

Since then, it seems that my life is starting to turn around. There's been some changes in my art representation but I have to think that this is a good move. I was contacted by a gallery who is interested in buying my art direct. The terrible flu that I caught on Wednesday seems to be easing up this morning....maybe life is beginning to get better! I don't usually lament about these things on my blog but I felt the need to put it out there that life is not always so great....and when it's not....the creative process saves some of us...in my case, it does.

So, I'm taking good care of myself...I hope you are too.

"Lovely Wings"

I worked on several pieces this weekend...this angel is my favorite. I started with a 24x30 stretched canvas and added a generous layer of molding paste. I stamped an image into the molding paste to add interest. I painted the entire canvas with a coat of black gesso. Then I painted my angel with a large brush and a palette of ochre, titanium buff, taupe, purple and copper. I love the abstract, rough design. I would love to keep her!

Friday's Art

The temperature has dropped 30 degrees in the past two days! 90 Degrees on Wednesday...now it's barely 58 degrees outside! I hate to think what our summer is going to be like!

This week feels like it has been 14 days long! I plan to take advantage of my two days off! Painting on Saturday and a get together for lunch and a movie with my girls on Sunday! Maybe throw in a little shopping for a dress for my son's upcoming college graduation.

I've been told by my rep to lay off the "girls" for a while and paint birds again to increase my income. I may miss my girls!

Welcome Spring

It's a beautiful spring day...almost 76 degrees! I felt a little better today than yesterday but still moody and a little tearful. Too many things have gone wrong lately that make me wonder how much exactly can one person handle! If my grandmother were here, she would say, "You can handle as much as you are given!"

For now, I will just keep painting, praying and putting my wishes out into the universe. Eventually, my world will stop spinning out of control and peace will come to me.

It is a beautiful day outside.

The sun is shining.

The birds are chirping.

The daffodils are blooming

A perfect Easter day.

I'm reminded of past Easter mornings when my children were small. The memory of the girls wearing new Easter dresses, shiny new shoes and fresh haircuts . My son searching for Easter eggs over and over again. It's nice to remember but it makes me sad that I can never recapture those moments. I keep seeing my oldest daughter in a light pink smocked dress with a beautiful white cardigan and her beautiful auburn hair - she must have been about six. That memory has haunted me all day. Holidays are so hard after losing a child....every holiday is filled with memories of my daughter, young and old. I should have made plans today....when I am alone with my thoughts...let's just say I'm not at my best!

Hope you are having a Happy Easter filled with joy and chocolate and peeps.

Snow, Snow and More Snow

We have been hit with a HUGE snowstorm this weekend! I've been stuck in a hotel since Friday....Administrator on Call at the hospital so it was my responsibility to make sure that all of my staff got to work safely and the hospital ran smoothly all weekend during the storm. Our staff pulled through like STORM TROOPERS!!! I couldn't ask for a better team....they've been here throughout the whole weekend, willing to take time away from their families in order to keep the hospital running seemlessly in this near disastrous time! As 3 feet of snow piled up outside, my staff took care of approximately 50 psychiatric patients and did it with a smile on their face! They are the best!!

I'm taking 4 days off this week...and boy do I need it after this!

We'll be digging out for days..We still can't get into our driveway. If I had my camera cord with me, I'd post pictures!! Be good to yourself!

I painted all weekend....This 18x24 painting was one of the last paintings that I completed yesterday. It was one of the hardest ...I worked for a long time on the background....

I crackled the background..first a layer of black, then a layer of crackle medium. Then another layer of blue paint. I decided the blue was too bright so I painted several layers of paint over the crackle to tone the blue down. I am pretty happy with the way it turned out.

I believe that 2010 will be filled with Growth for me. My art sales are increasing every month and my association with the CollectArtwork group is extremely exciting both creatively and financially. I continue to challenge myself daily in my artistic endeavours and I can't wait to see what the new year brings.

I think I've finally chosen the word Growth as my word for 2010....I will expect growth in many areas of my life!

By the way.update on my weight loss progress. Following Weight Watchers is proving to be very easy. I have lost 10 pounds since 12/28....YAY!! It really helps that everyone at work is on some diet of their own but even so, I'm determined to become healthy this year! Still having trouble finding the time to walk on my treadmill - moved it downstairs (that's one step) but haven't used it yet! Oh well, baby steps!!

Hello Saturday!!

It's Saturday morning....5:30am! The dogs forgot it was my day off!! Just an update to say that I've completed TWO WEEKS on my diet !! YAY!! I lost 8 lbs the first week....unbelievable but who's to say how much I really lost because I was using different scales. Anyway, I'm finding it really easy to stick to Weight Watchers point system! Everyone at work is dieting or making lifestyle changes and I am curious to see how long this will last. I am determined to lose 40 pounds.

My goal is to complete 4 paintings this weekend.....I will post the finished product tomorrow evening....I only completed 3 last weekend but "Claire was 18x24 and her face was quite detailed..see my previous post. She's listed now at FindFolkArt on Ebay.

I am determined to celebrate this new year. I am looking at 2010 as a tremendous opportunity for me...Here's my goals for the year.

1. I am determined to get healthy this year. After going to the doctor last week, I realized that now is the time to lose weight. My blood pressure is elevated and my cholesterol is high. I am now on medication to decrease my cholesterol and the next step is medication for my blood pressure. I have a family history of heart disease and I am developing all of the risk factors. I came home and went online and signed up for Weight Watchers online. I have been on the "diet" for a week now (it really doesn't feel like a diet) and plan to change my lifestyle. We have moved my treadmill to a more accessible location and will start walking daily.

2. I want to finish more artwork every week. Not only do we need the extra income (I have been the only working adult in the home for 2 years now) but creatively, I need to stay busy.

3. I want to spend more time with family. I spent too much time working last year and too little time with my children (adult children). I'd like to plan family nights more often.

That's all I've got! Self,family and art...I think those are the important things. If I can make small changes every day, I'll be happy.

After all the hustle and bustle, worrying if we are getting just the right gift....Christmas has come and gone! It's amazing how much fun Christmas is now that the kids are all young adults..The house is filled with joy and laughter and anticipation. Even the dogs joined in the fun.

The kids seemed to enjoy the gifts of art and especially the handpainted recipe boxes filled with their grandmother's recipes. Maybe one day, they will be the one bringing the pound cake or fudge cake to a holiday dinner!

I'm off to create some art today..

Merry Christmas

It's Christmas Eve...the day we celebrate the holiday. My grandchildren are here waiting in anticipation for everyone to arrive tonight. My father has called from Mississipi with his annual call announcing "It's Christmas Eve!" and all that's left is for the kids to arrive this evening. I watch my grandson and granddaughter - 10 and 13 - and wonder if they miss their mother as terribly as I miss my daughter! Four years ago, was her last Christmas and she was her happiest that Christmas. Three short weeks later she was gone. At the holidays, I miss her the most and it doesn't seem to get better with time.

Here's hoping you're keeping your family close during the Christmas season and enjoying the love of being together.

The turkey's in the oven, the macaroni and cheese is made, the stuffing is waiting in the fridge, the sweet potatoe casserole has the marshmallows waiting to toast and of course one disaster has already been made today (the turkey was bad - smelling to high heaven and had to go back to the store and get another one at seven this morning!!) All this and it's only 9am this morning! I'm almost jealous of people that eat at normal times like 6pm but my family insists on eating at 12:30. We've been doing it that way since I was a kid in Mississippi...years (too many to count) ago.

To all of you, a Happy Thanksgiving..no matter when you celebrate. Enjoy your family and friends! If you plan to take advantage of the Black Friday deals...have fun! Me..I'll be working and trying to get some rest this weekend. I've got a lot of painting to do to catch up for the blah mood I've been in lately.

New Shadow Boxes

I finished the first of two shadow boxes that I've been working on. Vintage sewing machine drawers and lots of found items are used in these little shadow boxes. I'll be adding these to my website when the second one is completed.

I'm slowly working my way out of my creative funk. Changed my "tune" so to speak and painted some really funky boxes yesterday...can't wait to post them! Trying to get started on some Christmas presents....

My mind is completely void of creativity....I feel like I am in a vortex of blah! I joined Mystele's Gut Art class to jump start my creative juices...I haven't gotten past the first 5 videos.

I decided to do something different in my studio so I started some vintage sewing machine drawer shadow boxes. I almost finished one, started another...there they sit on my messy art table.

I have some projects I want to start for the girls for Christmas. Maybe if I get in my studio and do a really good cleaning I'll get a little bit motivated.

Do you ever feel this way? Like someone sucked all the creative thoughts out of your head? I know that work is getting in the way of my art and I don't like it! What do you do to get you art Mojo back? I'd love to hear your thoughts and ideas.

Halloween at the Hospital....

There was fun for all yesterday at the psych hospital..this is just a few of the costumes. After spending the day celebrating Halloween a day early, we went out to dinner and then to the Goodwill store.

I picked up a cashmere turtleneck Talbots sweater for $3.00, a Banana Republic sweater for $3.00 and a J. Crew button down shirt for $3.50. I think I did well don't you??

I looked at the date on my last post and realized that it has been quite a while since my last post! Going back to work has taken quite a toll on me, leaving me no time for blogging, tweeting, facebook or even painting. I'm lucky if I get to flip through a magazine before falling asleep at night. Not my idea of balanced life!! I'm hoping to get some painting done this weekend - my website is looking a bit bare!

I'd like to put a question out to those of you that artists...What type of crackle product do you use? I'm looking for a product that you use AFTER you finish the painting - everything I've used is the two step process that requires a contrasting coat of paint. I'm looking for the crackle that you can apply to the entire painting with a antiquing glaze or stain. Any ideas???

I hope you have great plans for the weekend...stay warm and dry..we're in the middle of a nor'easter.

I am so delighted to have been given my life back! I saw my back surgeon today for my post-op visit....the last time I was there I was wheeled in in a wheelchair, in excruciating pain. Today, I walked in - a new woman! In my eyes, he is a miracle worker! I go back to work tomorrow with restrictions and start physical therapy this week. In order to prevent this from happening again (My spine is in terrible shape due to arthritis) I will need to get myself in shape and stay that way. (Here we go again!) Core exercises, yoga and weight loss....that's my prescription for good health.

Two new pieces of art that will be added to the site today...little bits of whimsy for sale in my studio at JacksonSquare Studio. This month, all my large paintings have been DRASTICALLY reduced....really reduced, not just a little bit. The September 20% Sale is now over and the October sale is even better!! If there's something you've your eye on...check it out...

I just noticed that this my 97th post. So, I should probably do something special for my 100th post. Like a giveaway or something. What do you think? I think that today, I will start looking around my studio for a little basket to put together and see if can I pull together some things....I'm thinkin a 100th post parth. I don't think it's kind of thing you just let pass, right? Well, I've got two more posts to go to plan it!

So healing is going well....walking daily. Walked almost the entire block yesterday. Still in a lot of pain during the day and night and resisting the urge to take painkillers all day...trying to use ice and movement and rest..Sleeping (or should I see attempting to sleep) is still very difficult! My leg becomes very painful at night..I'm looking forward to physical therapy and some tips they may be able to give me with that. I have NOT enjoyed not being able to ride in a car for thisperiod of time! I have strict instructions to stay out of a car - as a driver and as a passenger for two weeks! NO FUN! I am getting a little stir crazy and would like to go for a ride at least to the pharmacy or to the art supply store to replace the bottle of matte medium I needed...no such luck!!

Before I go, I want to get serious and ask that anyone that reads my blog to please stop and take a minute to think of my sister who is having surgery today. She is 43 years old and has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. She has two teenage daughters, a wonderful husband and a wonderful life and out of nowhere, found a lump under her arm. Anyway, breast cancer can strike anyone, any age group, any family! This surgery is the first step in her treatment. I know that she will be ok with good medicine, healing thoughts, and prayer. Please include her in yours, if you will.

Home from Back surgery..on the mend

So surgery went well! Amazinly well! The first few hours were a bit worrisome...There was much more to do inside my spine than he anticipated (he had to "chistle" much longer than usual and had to move my spine over to get to a large calcification). All of this meant, two hours longer in surgery and the probability of more pain. When I woke up, my leg was hurting like crazy! I was so disappointed but when my doctor was notified, he ran three doses of massive steroids and that pain went away.

It's Thursday morning, I've been home since yesterday and am doing great! The only pain I have is getting up and down. No leg pain, no hip pain - which is blesssed relief. I had so many people tell me that last day work "I'm praying for tomorrow" - I have to believe that someone was listening because I could have been feeling much worse right now! I don't want to push it...but I'm going to try to get in the studio and paint just a little this afternoon and a little longer tomorrow. I'm not going to push myself...I'll just see how it goes!

Here's my entry for the team challenge this week "Wee Witches". I haven't painting much due to my upcomin back surgery and horrible back and leg pain but I must say...I'm missing my studio like crazy! I saw the topic, had this little sketch drawn up and the background already to go....and well, her you go!

Gwyn, the Good Witch is a mixed media piece completed on a 12 x 12 piece of birch panel. I used modeling paste on the background to create a textured background and painted over it with a sort of china blue color. My little with is collaged on along with patterned papers, book pages and sheet music for interest. There's some stamping and painting on the background for visual interest too. A little sparkle and charcoal for aging the piece and she's ready to go! Hope you enjoy her. She will be posted on my website this weekend for sale.

"Balancing Act"

Finally, the doctor has determined that I need back surgery. I will have the surgery on Tuesday and my hope is that by Wednesday, this pain in my leg will be completely gone! I'm still amazed that I went to the doctor complaining of leg and back pain, he recommended an injection, I got it and immediately the pain increased. Within a week, I could barely walk and now I need surgery. When I asked how this happened, he said "Bad luck and bad genes". Wow!

No painting in almost a week. I've done a bit of sketching but no painting - that's one of the worst things about all of this! I'm hoping to get an ice pack, prop up my foot and get in the studio this weekend!

It's been difficult to paint this week...the injection I got in my back seems to have made things worse. The doctor seems to think that the discs that were injected may have herniated or ruptured so I am getting a new MRI on Monday. Meanwhile, I am barely walking, am sleeping in a chair and am in the worst pain I've ever been in my life! I'm just hoping that once the doctor diagnosis the problem that they fix it QUICK!

Taking a Day of Rest

This is the painting I've been working on for one the twins birthday presents. My nieces will be 24 later this month - I have raised them since a couple years after their mother died (my baby sister). They have turned out to be two beautiful young ladies - I dislike saying "nieces" because I think of them as my daughters. I love them so much. I know that my girls have always thought of them as sisters as well. So here's one painting finished - I scanned it and it looks a little dirty, it's really not as shabby as it looks here. It's actually really sweet. Lindsay's is finished as well, but just not waxed yet.

I'm taking a much needed day of rest. I think I worked 16 days in a row then had an epidural injection in my spine yesterday. Oh my Goodness, did that hurt! No medication to relax me, nothing...just a big ole needle deep into my discs that have no room in between the bones. I had no color in my face to begin with because I was feeling nauseous before I got there...I walked out of there lookin CHALKY. Yesterday was the worst day I've had in a while. Anyway, today's a bit better. Stomach still a bit queasy but my back doesn't feel as bad as yesterday and my leg doesn't feel that it weighs 50 lbs! Today..just rest and naps. That's it. I'm at the edge of exhaustion!

I just discovered Zazzle and all it has to offer. I can put my artwork on notecards, greeting cards, shoes....the possibilities are endless. I created a bunch of little notecards this morning and posted them for sale. They are really cute for less than $3.00. Take a look at my shop..It's JacksonSquare Studios....

I think that my sight has enough "large" paintings for the moment...I've started painting some little 8x8 gems that are going to be great for Christmas gifts! One painting that is almost finished has black polka dotted feet and a crystal doorknob on top...Love working with the small canvases. You can add so much "stuff" to them! I'll post her when I'm done.

Life is good right now, I've got paint crusted on my hands and my studio is a mess! That must mean I'm workin!! My loved one just made me a second table for my studio...she made it out of an old chippy door and spindles. OOH....the surface area I've got now...I'm drooling! Once she gets all of her tools out of there, a goold ol'e cleaning will definately be in order.

Happy Monday to all of you..I'm off to the surgeon today to hear the bad (or good )news about my back. Having severe pains down my legs, numbness in my toes and legs...MRI didn't look promising. It was actually 4 fully typed pages long!! So, I've been referred to a "Spinal Reconstructive Surgeon". Hmmmmm, what other type of news do you suppose he has to tell me!

I am working overtime at the hospital and in the studio. My job is intruding upon my creative time - so much so that I am trying to cram in painting in my off hours and I end up being exhausted when it finally catches up with me. Today I had to go in to the hospital to audit charts and I realized that it was my 14th day in a row of working! No wonder I am exhausted.

This is my newest painting - Jane. I named her Jane because I was so inspired after taking the face painting class by Jane Des Rosier. I love painting my little girls but these angels....I could just paint all day!

Tuesday is September 1..starting the count down until the Country Livin Fair....we're making the 8 hour drive for the weekend! I can't wait!! Are you going??

I need some rest..going to work in the morning for some more audits. Have a great evening!

Last fall we found some great old scrapbooks at an estate sale. One of them was from a Women's Civic Club from the 1920's...it includes all the handwritten programs, handpainted placecards for every luncheon, printed invitations, the guest lists....Charming ephemera!

I have included some of this on my newest painting. Notice how well the wax monogram has held up...and to think when I found this scrapbook, it was outside, at the bottom of a box, in the drizzle rain and it was at the most 20 degrees!

My new mixed media piece available online at jacksonsquarestudios. She's a bit different from my usual whimsical girls but I'm trying to use different textures and backgrounds and the these colors just "spoke" to me. Funny how sometimes you put the pencil in your hand and start sketching and what comes out on paper is not what you saw in your head. Once she started to form on the paper, I realized that she was exactly what I wanted to paint! I'm having so much fun stocking my web studio....I'm painting with wild abandon (LOL)....trying very hard not to sell anything on E-bay right now cuz I need to "stock my shelves" so to speak. I'm working on an adorable piece called "Bounce". I can't wait to show you - I'm in love with the dark colors I'm using - a great steel blue or slate gray (depends how the light is shining) textured paint background and painting on lots of faded book paper .

So this Ms. Gweneviere will be up on the site tonight as soon as my wayward gets back to school and posts here...I'm a bit challenged as to how to make a "thumbnail" and other essentials of the website - I tried to do it myself and my pictures were HUGE!!! I think that I'm going to have to break down and watch the tutorials....Oh boy, do I need an assistant!

My Double Life Comes to An End

All this time I've kept my "art" life

separate from my regular life.

I don't really know why,

I have read about other people who are "in the closet".

All that changed a couple of weeks ago.

I posted a few paintings on Facebook.

A dear friend bought my very favorite angel.

(The one I had planned for the home page of my web site)

The next thing I knew....

I'm "out"

My kids, who didn't even know I had a blog, are showing their co-workers at work.

My friends are admiring my artwork.

I love it....but I'm a little nervous.

A bit of folk art - I love the colors and the simplicity of these sweet little dresses. I love, love, love the antique clutch purse...we found the tiny little purse at an estate sale and I've been waiting for the perfect project in which to use it. I think I found it...don't you?

The gray kitty is painted in honor of my best friend's kitty "Eartha"

who lived an believable 20 years!

She didn't have polka dots but she did have beautiful eyes!

She looked like she woke up and put her eyeliner on every day!

I told you in a previous post that I was launching a website for my artwork....WHEW! Thank goodness, my son is helping me. Between working full time, blogging, tweeting, adding photos to Flickr, selling art on E-bay (I've got to make money to support my art supply habit!! LOL) and working full time....it's very difficult to find time to make the decisions involved in starting a website, much less actually DO the work and PAINT! Michael has pulled through like a real business partner and I'm so grateful for everything he's done!! He's majoring in business at Clemson - with the intention of using that degree as a backup plan with his real goal of going into law enforcement. I don't know...I'm seeing a very smart businessman. Maybe he should rethink his goals....

Speaking of Flickr...I'm loving my new Flickr badge on my sidebar...did you happen to see it??

Thank God for Saturday

I have spent my entire week focusing on my "other" job...my job as a nursing administrator.

We had a critical survey this week that lasted four days and boy was I stressed! To make things

worse, I woke up Monday morning, with flu symptoms that have lasted all week. When the survey was over on Thursday afternoon at 1:pm, I came home, put on my pajamas, climbed into bed and slept for an entire four hours. Then I woke up, ate a grilled cheese, watched a recorded Big Brother and went back to bed until 5am yesterday morning. I still feel achy and tired.

I had big plans for this weekend. I need to paint to stock my new website!

The lovely painting in the previous posting was to be the first piece of art on the site

but I sold her this week to a friend on Facebook. I SWEAR, I'm not swelling anything

else on E-bay, Facebook, or to friends until I get my Website up and running.

with a great web designer who, I hope, is willing to listen to all of

my simple demands and turn them in to a GREAT website!

New Art..Reclaimed Wood Panels

One beautiful angel with lots of texture, crackle and beeswax.

Favorite Artist Update

I've said before, Holly Farrell is one of my favorite artists. I saw her interviewed on Design, Inc. (my favorite design show on the Fine Living Network)

and was amazed at her talent. She is a self taught artist and I am always amazed at her talent. Her paintings are WAY out of my price range so I just love looking at her web site.

Angel and Vintage Lace

I tried something different with my newest painting.

Take a look.

I started with a canvas - layed down a thick layer of modeling paste

I created a bit of a pattern with the paste.

I painted and collaged directly on the textured canvas.

Tied it up with a piece of vintage lace and fastened on some vintage buttons.

I think it turned out nice...what do you think??

I may have mentioned in the past that I live only a few miles from Rehoboth Beach.

If my life gets too hectic, I need to feel like I've escaped from the world or if I just want to hide for few hours - I usually go to the beach to try to calm down.
Lately, I've avoided the crowds. Stayed to myself. Hung around the house.

Today, I'm feeling less like this guy...standing alone on the rock. I don't feel the need to isolate myself anymore, dwell on my issues or obsess over what should have been or could have been.

I'm ready to join the world again....I'm done wallowing now. (as my mother would say) Time to put on my big girl panties and move on. Half of the battle is done.

Fat Smash

So, on a previous post, I mentioned my desire to lose weight, an ongoing battle!! Everyone at work is currently on the "Fat Smash Diet", the Dr. Ian Smith Diet of the Celebrity Fit Club. I don't know all of the details because my own book hasn't arrived in the mail yet but I do know the first nine days is a Detox program.

For the last three days I have eaten nothing but vegetables and fruit and water (okay, diet soda, too but that's it!) For the first two days, I would have slapped someone for a carb...yesterday I was standing in my co-worker's office and I felt for a moment that I might just pass out. I think that I could actually eat more during the day than the nectarine that I ate between the time I woke up and 5pm (that might have had something to do with the dizziness) but the raw vegetables that were packed in my bag just seemed unappealing to me!

The great thing about this part of the diet though is the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables. I love stopping at the produce stands on the way home from work and buying fresh picked vegetables and fruits for dinner. There's a very large open air market on my way home that is fast becoming my favorite place to shop! They offer samples of their melons, pineapple, cherries, blueberries, and strawberries . They offer local organic produce and carry just about every fruit and vegetable you can think of and some you've never seen or heard of. If you don't feel like cooking dinner, there's a guy outside on the BBQ. They even have a table of $1.00 items that are ready to eat....I bought a giant bag of tiny asparagus that were just ripe...I roasted them and OMG were they delicious!!

So....Day 4 of my 9 day Detox diet begins. Maybe my book will arrive today and I will know what is in store for me. I know that we are all losing weight (water weight) and feeling light as a feather..haha! I'm off to ship out some paintings that sold (thank you!) and plan for a family reunion.

The year is half way over and it's time to give my employees their mid-year evaluations. It made me think about myself and where I am in the process of accomplishing my goals for the year.

Here's a list of the things that I want to do before the year is over....

1. Lose 40 pounds (or at least 30)

2. Exercise at least 3 or 4 times per week..right now, I don't do anything. NOTHING

I get up at 4:30 every morning and go to work for 10 or 11 hours per day. By the

By the time I get home...I'm exhausted and I either work on the computer or paint.

3. Clean up my studio....it would be nice for that room to be clean and organized just

once!

4. Use my sewing machine more often....finish all of the projects that I've bought

fabric for.

I could go on and on but I'd like to be realistic...How about you? I'm sure you have made New Year's Resolutions but have you reevaluated yourself? If so, How are you doing?

How have I been spending my time lately?

Painting angels...lots of them!

and using crackle paint.

I love it.

I love the textural interest that the crackle paint adds to the painting...

I love the deep lines of color I can add once the crackle paint has been added

to the halo and wings....

I'm also loving Walnut Ink Stain....

Love the aged appearance it adds to the paintings.

Oh, and I forgot the gold leaf I'm adding to my paintings!

I'm loving that too.

Did I mention the beeswax?

I love the shine and texture it adds to the artwork.

And the scent....wow...it is so yummy!

I am loving the copper colored paint of her dress!

It continues to rain here in Delaware.... I coined the phrase "Seasonal Affective Psychosis" due to the large amount of psychotic patients that continue to fill our hospital...I can only attribute it to the weather! I come home so tired and drained that I have spent very little time painting after work. My art journal pages look as crazy as the patients....I fear posting them - someone may commit me to the my hospital! Even my blog postings are sparse. I must try to improve..

Art Journaling using Layer Love Pages....

Yesterday, I felt that I was under the influence of a massive dose of caffeine! I finished two paintings....drew a couple more girls and still felt that I needed to do something. Of course there was plenty I could have done around my house or my studio (cleaning, straightening art supplies, etc.) but I wasn't in the mood for that!

So I used my page from my Layer Love class...one of my favorites...and did my first attempt at Art Journaling. Loved it!! It's addicting....which is not good. I already have way too many things that I am trying to do. I guess I can save this for right before bed and when waiting at the doctors office, etc. What about you? When do you art journal? How do you find time to create lovely art journals when you are also creating art in other forms?? I'd love to hear from you.

Thought I would share my newest painting...she's a mixed media angel I created on a wood panel. Cute isn't she?

I keep challenging myself, trying new things. My Layer Love class continues with Julie Pritchard. It's a painting class - creating backgrounds. The backgrounds are great for art journaling or other projects. I have not gotten involved in art journaling yet though I would like to. I am fascinated by the work of Teesha Moore and others like her. I'm not sure when I would find the time to do this but I think it so cool! I have always doodled on everything....my papers at work are covered with flowers, stars, shapes, etc. The more boring the meeting, the more doodling I do. I think I've decided that life would be so much easier if there were 36 hours in the day and I didn't need to sleep.
